Kinglake, Alexander William, Als to Madame Mohl
Kinglake, Alexander William
Als to Madame Mohl
London: A. W. Kinglake, [1880-1881]. ALS from British historian and travel writer A. W. Kinglake, author of Eothan, to a Madame Mohl, thanking her for her introductions to important French political figures Barthélemy St. Hilaire, and the President of the Republic, (most likely Jules Ferry, under whom St. Hilaire was minister for foreign affairs from 1880 to 1881). The letter is written on a single sheet of notepaper folded once to make 4 panels. Some age-toning and soiling, but overall Very Good. .

Eothen
London, Blackie and Sons Ltd, 1907. Cloth. A copy of Kinglake's 'Eothen', with a design by celebrated decorative artist Talwin Morris (1865 - 1911). Talwin Morris was a prolific book designer and decorative artist working in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, particularly known for his Glasgow Style furniture, metalwork and book designs. Alexander William Kinglake (1809 – 1891) was an English travel writer and historian. His first literary venture was Eothen; or Traces of travel brought home from the East, a very popular work of Eastern travel, apparently first published anonymously, in which he described a journey he made about ten years earlier in Syria, Palestine and Egypt, together with his Eton contemporary Lord Pollington. Elliot Warburton said it evoked "the East itself in vital actual reality" and it was instantly successful. With an introduction by A. T. Quiller-Couch, and a frontispiece of Kinglake. In a green cloth binding with gilt decorated front board. Externally smart. Some light discolouration to the boards and to the spine. Internally generally firmly bound. Pages are bright and clean. Very Good . Ill.: Talwin Morris. Very Good .
